This Epic Journey Of Productivity Pro Ali Abdaal Will Make You Want To Become A Solopreneur Now
As an online entrepreneur or solopreneur, I’m always on the lookout for inspiring people who have built an online empire.
How they have built a life where they are in control. Where they can choose how they spend their time.
That’s why I am here as well and I want to help others do the same.
So, here’s how I found this impressive solopreneur.
I was wandering through a bookstore when I saw a book called Feel Good Productivity by Ali Abdaal.
I’ve never heard of him before.
I opened the book while I was still standing in the bookstore and read a few pages. And wow — I loved the structure of the book. Simple pages, great text, lessons learned, and stories in between. Easy to follow. And yet packed with wisdom and everyday food for thought. I loved it and bought it.
Since then I have devoured his book and also looked up what else he does.
His story can inspire us all.
Let’s dive in.
Ali Abdaal — The Productivity Pro
Ali has grown his fan base to over a million people over the years by consistently creating content that resonates with people.
Here’s how:
1. YouTube
Channel Launch: Ali started his YouTube channel in 2016 while studying medicine at Cambridge University. Initially, he posted videos about medical school advice, study techniques, and productivity tips aimed at students.
Content Evolution: As his audience grew, Ali expanded his content to include tech reviews, productivity tools, and personal development topics. His video titles were often optimized for search, such as “How I Take Notes on My iPad” and “How to Study for Exams — Evidence-Based Revision Tips.”
Growth Strategy: Consistency was key. Ali committed to posting at least one video per week. His channel really started growing insanely in 2019.
Collaborations: Ali also teamed up with other YouTubers like Matt D’Avella and Thomas Frank. These collaborations often featured joint videos, interviews, or discussions on productivity and content creation.
2. Newsletter
Launch of Newsletter: In 2020, Ali started his weekly newsletter, where he shares tips on productivity, personal growth, and content creation. The newsletter helped him build a closer community by offering more than just videos — like book recommendations, personal insights, and productivity hacks.
3. Twitter and Instagram
Twitter: Ali hopped on Twitter to dish out quick productivity tips, share his thoughts on life as a content creator, and drop links to his YouTube videos and articles. His Twitter became the spot for chatting with other creators and keeping everyone updated on his latest projects.
Instagram: On Instagram, Ali mixed it up with personal life updates, behind-the-scenes peeks, and clips from his videos.
4. Online Courses
Courses: In 2020, Ali kicked off his big online course, *Part-Time YouTuber Academy,* to help new YouTubers build and grow their channels. He promoted it a lot on his YouTube, in his newsletter, and on social media, getting his audience excited and filling up the class. The course isn’t cheap at $995, but people seem to love it.
He hosted the course on Teachable, which made it easier for him to reach more people and grow his teaching business.
5. Blog and Website
Website Content: Ali also maintained a personal blog on his website, where he published articles on productivity, studying, and tech tools.
SEO Optimization: His blog posts were SEO-optimized to attract organic traffic from Google, further growing his audience outside of YouTube.
6. Podcasts
Own Podcast: He also launched his own podcast, “Not Overthinking,” co-hosted with his brother, Taimur Abdaal. The podcast focuses on deep dives into productivity, mental models, and the psychology of everyday life.
7. TikTok
Short-Form Content: Ali expanded to TikTok, where he shared short-form videos that condensed his longer YouTube content into quick, digestible tips. This platform helped him reach a younger demographic and drive more traffic to his YouTube channel and courses.
Timeline Overview:
2016: Ali launches his YouTube channel, focusing on medical school content.
2018–2019: Begins expanding content to productivity and tech, sees significant growth.
2020: Launches “Part-Time YouTuber Academy” and his newsletter, starts podcasting.
2021: Exceeds 1 million subscribers on YouTube, continues expanding his brand across multiple channels.
What we can all learn
Ali Abdaal’s success was built through consistent content creation on YouTube, strategic expansion into other platforms like a newsletter, podcast, Instagram, and TikTok, and leveraging SEO, collaborations, and online courses to scale his influence and income.
His multi-channel approach allowed him to grow a diverse and engaged following over approximately 4–5 years.
As always, steady wins the race. Build out channel by channel and don’t overwhelm yourself immediately.
Good things will come if you take the time and effort to build them up.
And never forget to have fun while doing so.

Thank you - I have downloaded the audible book to listen to in my car, and am looking forward to it.
I had so many channels at the start of the year - all going nowhere fast. Now I concentrate on my Substack, my website, my Facebook group, and that's about it - I don't have time for anything else! Narrowing down to those has made my life easier and more productive.
I think people need to get better at the being patient thing. I know I do. Growth will come with time and trying to do everything everywhere all at once (lol) rarely if ever works out well.
Thanks for the inspirational read!
