good question. my thinking here is long-term. although I have seen posts of substack already on google, I anyway think it's a good way to set things up for long-term. Substack as a platform is growing and it can only help you stand out more.
I guess there is some friction to it, but I would consider that similar to any other platform as X or Medium, where, if you don't have an account you cannot proceed.. or do you mean something else?
And, yea, I mean the popup. Fair point on other platforms, however, X has some half a billion users and Medium has 5 free reads per month for non-members (plus far more users than Substack).
I'm hopeful about Substack's long-term prospects - I've appreciated my 2 years building here.
However not naive to the financial realities. Lots of venture capital invested to this point. Those venture capitalists will want to see returns. The current financial realities of Substack simply don't support that.
But, here's to remaining hopeful (fingers crossed🤞)
Wow, so helpful. As a substacle newbie, I appreciate these tips very much. I ´m just starting out with my newsletter and your article is invaluable. Thank you for sharing it!
I have had a medium account before, I just enjoy reading and then the paid subscriptions made that difficult. Yeah I understand you have to be paid for your content and I think am about to join the trend but my only problem is how to start... Anyway I joined wanderwealth I hope the spelling is right. 😜😁 Let's see what happens...
Thanks Claudia you’re inspiring me to learn more about how to navigate the tech technology and baffled still yet intrigued so how do I get to this dashboard?
hank you! if you are on your https://substack.com/home > you can see on the upper right corner the button that says dashboard. at least this is there for me. can you see it? :)
ahh okay. then in the app, click on your profile picture (upper right corner) > and underneath you should find your publication (but I see you don't have one yet), but theoretically you could then click on the button in the upper right corner and go to manage subscriptions.. hm, in your case it should be something like https://paulakeim.substack.com/publish/home.
OK, I’m getting there so my site is called between the rockets of desire working on the profile thing now thanks Claudia. I bet you I feel like a laugh as long as I keep laughing at myself it’s so cool. I let myself off the hook everybody else.
yes, so if you go to your dashboard > recommendations > upper right corner you can find the button "manage". if you click on it you can see your recommendations and if you scroll down the page, you'll see the settings. if you unable the first part there (recommendations on homepage), your homepage links will be shown right away and no recommendations. hope this helps :)
Really useful, Claudia thank you! Splitting into sections is something I found really useful recently. I wonder if this solves the problem of people who think they need to run a number of different Substacks... or are there any hidden downsides vs running multiple Substacks?
really good question. I think a new Substack just allows you to be bigger - you can own a complete new homepage with everything around it, which is not possible with sections.
so I think if you become really big it makes more sense to have multiple substacks. especially if they are very different topic-wise.
For me, I think it's a great feature that readers can choose to just subscribe to a single section of your Substack. But to do so relies on them knowing that they can do that, and knowing how to do it! If you go heavy on newsletters from one section they don't like, they could just unsubscribe from everything... But I think it's a risk worth taking in order to better organise content and drive the people who do want it, to the right place, faster.
Great post, thanks! I added my websites and sections, and now I'm updating my posts to appear in the sections.
awesome, thanks for sharing this as well :)
Thanks for this idea. I am going to work on that today!
nice! :)
Super helpful, thank you! We are new to Substack and these are some valuable tips.
awesome, happy it helps :)
Have you - or others - found that SEO makes any difference for Substack posts?
For example, I have never come across a Substack post in a Google search. However, I frequently come across Medium posts.
Even if a Substack post came up in a Google search, I wonder if the automatic Substack popup creates a friction layer?

Good points - e.g., long-term.

thanks, Violet!!
Thanks for the insight, Claudia!
sure thing, happy it helps :)
I prefer sections over tags, but there's something I don't like that much, even if you set them up as you suggest.
When receiving a newsletter regarding a section the sender email will be: yoursubstackname+sectionname@substack.com
ah yeah, good point.. not sure if there is a fix for that.. but I’ll check that out!

I really can’t. I believe it’s probably because I’m using my phone. I don’t know, but I’m certainly things.

or what's your name on Substack and then add .substack.com/publish/home.

Indeed can you believei have never had a laptop or computer
Paying quartlu massive taxes then laptop yay !!!

thanks for your comment :)
Love this Claudia - thank you!
Q: When I do my links they show up under recommendations instead of under my bio
So you know of a solution? Please and thank you :-)
yes, so if you go to your dashboard > recommendations > upper right corner you can find the button "manage". if you click on it you can see your recommendations and if you scroll down the page, you'll see the settings. if you unable the first part there (recommendations on homepage), your homepage links will be shown right away and no recommendations. hope this helps :)
thank you Claudia! I wonder if there’s a way to have recommendations under home page links…I’ll play w it :-)
yeah, play around with it. I don't think it is, but let me know in case you find out a way to do it :)
Thank you for sharing these tips! 🙌
thanks for the feedback :) happy it helps
