It’s All About This One Thing…
When you're online, whether writing, building an audience, or growing a community, there’s one thing that sits beneath it all:
Trust.
And yes, building trust takes time. But it can be supported by systems that help you build relationships. Your first email, message, or interaction sets the tone. Nowadays, people decide quickly whether to lean in or tune out.
Also, and I say that all the time, in times of AI, being human and connecting from one human being to another is your hidden superpower.
Finally, paid conversions start with trust. Before someone pays you, they need to trust you. And trust starts with how you show up right at the beginning.
The Surprisingly Simple (But Ruthless) Routine Behind My Substack Growth
“How much time do you spend daily on Substack?” is one of the questions I get asked most often.
Start It The Right Way
#1 Welcome Email
When someone decides to subscribe to you, they will automatically get a welcome email sent out. Good news, you can adjust that welcome email first. Just go to your settings, and emails and click on edit “Welcome email to free subscribers”. In your welcome email, you want to give a
Warm, personal greeting
→ Make the reader feel instantly appreciated and seen.Short intro to the newsletter
→ One-liner about what your newsletter is and why it’s worth their time.Clear expectations
→ How often they’ll hear from you and what kind of content they’ll getPopular or helpful links.
→ A favorite post, free resource, or a “Start here” guide to explore your work.Call-to-action for paid upgrade
→ Simple, friendly pitch for paid perks (bonus posts, community, Q&As, etc.).Link to upgrade
→ Make it easy to upgrade with a visible, clear CTA button or link.Tone and voice that reflects your brand
→ Let them feel your personality right away.
#2 Write a Chat Message
The second part of my welcome sequence is that I write a chat message to everyone signing up, basically welcoming them again and sharing some useful information. The trick here is not to make it too sales-y (some will always take it that way), but to introduce yourself and share valuable information for them.
There is this tool for this in case you’d like to write more automated messages and welcome all of your subscribers.
This is what a lot of my interactions on the 1:1 chat look like and I’m so happy about this. That brings me to the third part of the welcome sequence.
#3 Invite them to Your Group Chat
While having people talk with you 1:1 is great, you can only form a community if people come together to support each other. That’s why the third part of my welcome sequence is to invite them to the group chat of your publication.
You can do this via the 1:1 chat or even mention and link your group chat in the welcome email. By this, you make sure that people really come and visit your chat.
To get the link to your group chat, go to your chat, click the three dots in the upper right corner, and click copy link. You can also pin your own group chat or tell people to pin yours, so you stay on top of their minds in the chats.
I can recommend structuring your DM like this
short intro to you/your story
something valuable for your reader
a link to your extra tools/products.
Voilà! There you have a personal and high-converting (yet super simple) welcome sequence that will make sure to connect with your audience.
🚀 If you want direct feedback on your welcome sequence, I will review my paid subscribers sequence this Friday (watch out for the chat!).

Perfect timing for this to arrive as I was working on this!
Thanks for sharing this, Claudia!
It’s a little thing like this that helps you better connect with your audience and makes your first impression a positive one.
Also, great to hear from you right after I subscribed too.
